Art for art's sake
I'm working on a longer post and don't have time to finish it tonight, so I thought I'd just share this beautiful image. It's Gustave Moreau's A Esfinge Vencedora. (Click on the image to enlarge it.) The sphinx is rather winsome--completely out of keeping with the myth. I like that, and I love the surprise of white skin against the gloomy background.

"Winsome" is right. It's got a rather puppyish aspect. Like it wants a good scratch behind the ears ora game of fetch. At any moment, it might start licking the woman's face.
That's funny, jm. What really is going on anyway? I don't know anything in the sphinx myth that it might represent.
I think ol' Gustave is going his own way with this one.
I love dropping by to see what's here. Thanks, as usual.
