Winter, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, 1573
For those of us stuck on the northern half of the planet, winter officially arrives tomorrow, December 22 at 12:08am CST. Dave and I are going to light a roaring fire outside tonight and imbibe something intoxicating. I hope everyone else greets winter in whatever way they find warm and pleasurable. As for you Aussies, have fun in the sun and pity us.
Black are my steps on silver sod;
ReplyDeleteThick blows my frosty breath abroad;
And tree and house, and hill and lake,
Are frosted like a wedding-cake.
Robert Louis Stevenson
HAPPY SOLSTICE!
How lovely that is, Mary !
ReplyDelete[Have you ever seen the tiny Singer Sargent portrait of him?
It's my favorite, because it captures his fevered neurasthenic nature so eloquently.
I'm funny that way- I also crave a very small, triangular wooden gesso of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, with her apron filled with red and white roses. I'll bet everyone walks right by her lovely face]
Enjoy the Solstice, dear ones !
25 years ago, I cooked for 3 days, and crammed a motley assortment of 43 friends into my 2 room flat to celebrate...
Best party I ever had.
What I wouldn't give to experience it with you...
Happy Solstice! I'd love to see a picture of the fire.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had pics, Renee, but we were kinda busy toasting with Dave's whiskey (acquired in Scotland, of course.)
ReplyDeleteAdd a solstice party to the list of things we should all share someday. I am really not a party gal, but hanging out around a campfire with friends, watching the moon rise--that's my idea of a good time.
